Maternity Care in Southeastern PA
Maternity Care in Southeastern PA is at a critical juncture in our region.
MCC has taken the lead in documenting the challenges pregnant women face getting insurance, accessing prenatal care, and finding healthcare providers. In the last ten years, we have seen a full childbirth crisis emerging, with 19 hospitals dicontinuing maternity services. This trend shows no sign of slowing. In just seven months, five more maternity units closed: Chestnut Hill Hospital (November 2008), Brandywine Hospital (December 2008), Central Montgomery Medical Center (February 2009), and Northeastern Hospital (June 2009).

Childbirth at a Crossroads Report
MCC's Childbirth at a Crossroads report (2006) reviews the regional availability of prenatal and maternity services and health disparities in maternity care. Five major findings affecting maternal health were identified: a diverse population; lack of access to care; a loss of practitioners and hospitals, inequities in health outcomes, and lack of cultural supports.
