MCC finds barriers to prenatal care in Philadelphia

The Status of Maternal Care in Southeastern Pennsylvania

MCC conducted research on the availablity of prenatal care at Philadelphia Health Care Centers.  MCC staff contacted the Health Care Centers in February and August of 2005 and August of 2006 to learn how long the wait was for the first available prenatal care appointment.   Overall, the average wait time has decreased by one week, from 5 to 4 weeks.  However, there is a wide range of availability for a prenatal care appointment, from 3 days to up to 7 weeks.

For more information on MCC's research on the status of maternal and child health, read our Childbirth at a Crossroads report.  After reading the report, share your experiences, great ideas, comments, or questions by emailing mcc@momobile.org!

Research for the report began a couple years ago with two roundtables, during which stakeholders had an opportunity to voice their many concerns, experiences, and recommendations.  For more information on these past sessions, please visit Session 1: Stakeholders Speak and Session 2: How Beliefs and Practices Evolve.
