Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Philadelphia Campaign

Breastfeeding benefits society, employers, mothers, babies and families! A federal law now requires employer support for breastfeeding mothers. Maternity Care Coalition's Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Philadelphia campaign engages employers, including hospitals, to implement breastfeeding policies and practices that benefit patients, patrons and employees.

Breastfeeding support is the law!

Maternity Care Coalition's Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Philadelphia campaign targets employers and healthcare facilities to implement the health care reform provision for workplace breastfeeding support. The provision states that employers shall provide reasonable, unpaid break time and a private, non-bathroom place for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child’s birth. Employers with less than 50 employees are not subject to the requirement if it would cause “undue hardship.” Read the Department of Labor's factsheet for more details.

We kicked-off the Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Philadelphia campaign with our 2010 Breastfeeding-Friendly Business Awards. Check out photos and more!

The Building a Breastfeeding-Friendly Philadelphia campaign is part of the Get Healthy Philly city-wide obesity-prevention initiative sponsored by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of obesity in children and helps women lose weight post-pregnancy. This project is made possible by funding from the Department of Health and Human Services and Get Healthy Philly, an initiative of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
