Preventing SIDS
- Place your baby to sleep on his or her back at night and during naptime. Let your baby play on their stomach while you watch carefully.
- Have your baby sleep in a crib that meets the Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.
- Use a firm mattress.
- Don't place any types of bedding such as pillows, quilts or bumpers in the crib. There should be no toys in the crib either.
- Don't let your baby get too warm during sleep.
- If a light blanket is needed, make sure you tuck it in on all sides and that it doesn't come above the baby's arms. Make sure the baby's feet are at the bottom of the crib.
- Make sure your baby's head and face stay uncovered.
- Do not allow smoking around your baby. Exposure to smoke increases the risk of SIDS.
- Breastfeeding helps reduce the risk of SIDS and has other health benefits for mom and baby.
