Smoke Free Moms

Training
MCC community health workers, known as Advocates, have all completed the PA chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics' smoking cessation training, Clean Air for Healthy Children.

Past Programs

Delaware County Comprehensive Tobacco Control (2002-2006)
Through a grant from the Delaware County Office of Behavioral Health, the Delaware County MOMobile provided comprehensive tobacco education, prevention intervention, and CO biofeedback monitoring as part of the County's efforts to address these issues. This support was available through PA's tobacco settlement funds.

Healthy at Home (2003-2005)
This Office of Minority Health-funded program supported an environmental health intervention at MCC's Latina MOMobile. The program had a four-part intervention that included education on secondhand smoke; asthma and pest management; lead poisoning prevention; and household product safety.

March of Dimes Prematurity Prevention (2004)
Through a grant from the March of Dimes in 2004, a Smoking Cessation Specialty Advocate at the Norristown Area MOMobile provided an intensified smoking cessation intervention for pregnant and newly parenting women and their families, and conducted a smoke-free pregnancies pledge card campaign.

Smoke Free Families Research Initiative (2001)
Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, this 2001 pilot research project was a collaborative effort with the Philadelphia Department of Public Health at the Strawberry Mansion MOMobile that combined smoking reduction and cessation support and counseling by MCC Advocates with biomedical feedback that informs women of cotinine levels in their urine. This feedback was used as a tool to discuss the negative effect of nicotine on pregnancies. Findings from the study are available.

Community Education (2001)
Through Madres en Contra del Tabaco (Mothers Against Tobacco),MCC developed a program that focused on pregnant Latina women and their families at the Latina and Norristown Area MOMobiles. MCC Advocates provided support to pregnant women to reduce or quit smoking and educated community members about the dangers of secondhand smoke. Clients, along with their household family members, signed a Smoke-Free Pregnancies pledge card (regardless of their smoking status) to encourage smoke-free environments in households with pregnant women or young children. MCC expanded this pledge campaign to African American clients at the West Philadelphia MOMobile in the fall of 2001. MCC Advocates continue to provide counseling and resources to support smoke-free pregnancies and communities.
